Censoring Social Networks

March 7, 2008 by · Filed Under Social Media

With the ever increasing popularity of social networks, the issue of censorship is becoming increasingly pertinent. YouTube has been blocked in a number of countries, as it shows video clips that may display inappropriate content. In recent news, Pakistan attempted to ban a video criticizing Islam and as a result shut down YouTube.

A new website, Juicy Campus, allows college students to anonymously post gossip. Some victims of the site have petitioned their campuses to ban the site. How does free speech apply in the social media world? Where is the line drawn between free speech and libel? Should users be punished for posting offensive content?
