Commercial Accounts Coming to Twitter

Twitter has become one of the most widely used platforms for businesses. While there have been many rumors surrounding paid accounts on Twitter, there has been no truth to them until now. According to Twitter co-founder, Biz Stone, commercial accounts will benefit businesses looking to further investigate the impact of their Tweeting efforts by incorporating things like analytics. Of course this doesn’t change Twitter for the everyday user, the service will still be free and commercial accounts will remain optional.
According to VentureBeat, “The company has already moved in this direction by releasing a guide for professional users, detailing how companies can use it to find customers, pass on deals and perform market research. It is also going to offer ‘certified accounts,’ for businesses”. Certified accounts will ensure users that they are following actual companies or company representatives rather than people pretending to be them. Will the emphasis on analytics and statistics be worth the price (which is to be determined) for a commercial accounts? What other benefits could Twitter incorporate into commercial accounts?
It seems that Twitter, although slowly, has begun to implement their monetization strategy…which is good…everyone else seems to be making money off of them while they survive on Venture Capital. There are so many that see the demise of Twitter, but it just doesn’t look like the are making the kind of decisions that would put them under. With Google and Facebook strategically becoming closer to direct competition, Twitter may be the hot business to try an purchase…especially for Google (real-time search). The next year is going to very interesting with Google dropping Voice, Wave, and Android. We’ll see how the others fare.
