Facebook Making Changes

September 11, 2009 by Marcel Media · Filed Under Social Media

Social networking powerhouse Facebook is making improvements s to accommodate the changing sphere of social media. About a month ago, Facebook announced a simpler version of its site, Facebook Lite. According to TechCrunch, Facebook Lite was “intended to be used in countries where high speed Internet connections are sparse or [non-existent], apparently Facebook has realized there’s a real desire among all its users to have a smaller version of the service. The design is neater and the navigation brings simplicity to the traditional navigation of Facebook”. Will Facebook Lite eventually take over the traditional Facebook site?

Playing off of Twitter’s response feature, Facebook will now let users reply to their contacts within status updates and posts. Facebook’s blog states, “Now, when you are writing a status update and want to add a friend’s name to something you are posting, just include the “@” symbol beforehand. As you type the name of what you would like to reference, a drop-down menu will appear that allows you to choose from your list of friends and other connections, including groups, events, applications and Pages. Soon, you’ll be able to tag friends from applications as well. The “@” symbol will not be displayed in the published status update or post after you’ve added your tags”. While this works out in the Twitter sphere, will Facebook see positive results from tagging?

It is important to realize that there are areas of the world that are less fortunate than others and high speed internet is something that just doesn’t exist.
