Facebook Membership Growth Doubles in Less Than a Year

Facebook has been the phenomenon in the social networking sphere for the past year. According to Switched, Facebook officially surpassed MySpace as the most popular social networking site in August of 2008, boasting a growth rate of 127-percent over the course of 2008. Less than a year later, Facebook is shattering these numbers. Switched writes that, “Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has announced on the company’s blog that the site’s membership has climbed to 200 million — doubling in just eight months”.
Facebook itself has gone through various changes. In its early days, users had to be part of a limited network to even have access to the site. Opening the site to all users has definitely proved to be a step in the right direction in terms of growth. But what will Facebook do with its growth? Facebook has announced some positive additions to its site, emphasizing the importance of bringing people together through the social network. Facebook is calling this project FacebookForGood, where people can “share their stories about how Facebook has helped them give back to their communities, effect change or connect with a distant relative”.
