inDegree: LinkedIn for Graduate Students

September 4, 2009 by Marcel Media · Filed Under Social Media

When Facebook first started, it was a social network dedicated solely to students. While it has since then grown into a hub for all users and businesses, inDegree is a new social network taking back the education sphere. ReadWriteWeb has compared inDegree to the likes of LinkedIn, but there are key differences. inDegree CEO Alexander Miningham tells ReadWriteWeb, “while many grad students do indeed see some job hunting success via the behemoth site, many others have not yet built the professional networks to find a great deal of value there”.

What will make inDegree stand out among other social networks? inDegree provides its users with educational connections: “users … are placed in…’education networks’, which allow users to find and connect with classmates or alumni – who are arguably more useful in a job-search scenario. Users can share documents and work collaboratively through the site. Job listings on the site are for advanced degree-holders only, which creates a welcome bottleneck for jobseekers. Additionally, inDegree offers four different types of groups of users: graduate students, alumni with graduate degrees, employers and universities.

Do you think inDegree will be an effective startup?
