Location-Based Marketing Underway Thanks to Mobile

Location-based marketing could be closer than others may think. This of course, is all thanks to the revolutions being made via mobile. Whether it is through text messaging or mobile web browsing, the mobile phone is making waves because of its instant communication factor. Users are instantaneously connected to everything far away, but also close by.
As Reuters reports, “Today’s mobile phones can provide remarkably specific location data to their users through a combination of embedded GPS chips and network-based cell-tower data. It’s a feature that holds great promise for commercial applications by providing the ability to deliver to mobile phone users information, entertainment and advertising tailored to their location”. While location-based communication has not been used to its fullest potential, two players—Verizon Wireless and Sprint—are paving the way by providing developers with GPS data from certain Smartphones and by providing location data to different developers, respectively.
Location-based marketing could affect businesses and artists, by advertising different sales, shows, music, advertising promotions, among other creative outlets. If successful, location-based information could change the way in which users communicate with each other, as well as with businesses.
