Microsoft Offers Decision Engine, Unveils Bing

May 29, 2009 by Marcel Media · Filed Under Web 2.0

Microsoft recently unveiled a new form of search engine, Bing. It seems that Microsoft is trying steer as clearly away as possible from the term ‘search engine’, opting for the term ‘decision engine’. What is a decision engine, and how will Bing compare to larger search engines?

Bing will not have an official release until June 3, but it is getting a lot of buzz. The decision engine is supposed to “empower people to gain insight and knowledge from the Web, moving more quickly to important decisions.” Bing’s interface is smooth and user-friendly. Microsoft is using its acquisition of Powerset to incorporate related searches into results on Bing. For instance, related topics will appear. CNet states that, “an excerpt of the text on a search result [appears] if you hover over it. This saves a lot of time if you’re not quite sure if you want to follow a result”. One issue for Google has been its inability to yield real-time results in its news section. CNet reports that Bing’s results yielded news items within minutes after publishing.
