Nokia Makes Strategic Moves

Last week, cell phone manufacturing company, Nokia announced its acquisition of social networking site, Plazes. While Plazes is only a start-up site, it offers unique services compared to other social networking sites. Plazes prides itself in location-aware services, in which users can create different activities or events, promote them and then participate. Plazes’ functions are facilitated with mobile capabilities.
Nokia states that their goals include bringing people together through providing Internet services. And with mobile marketing and mobile web services on the rise, Nokia places itself in a strategic position, open for success. In fact, Nokia made other deals this week, showing its ambition for success. For example, Nokia bought part of Symbian, a manufacturer of cell phone software, and plans on giving the software away, which opens opportunities to companies like Google to capitalize on mobile marketing. Nokia’s latest business endeavors give it the edge to compete in the Internet services industry.
