Should Search Be Regulated?

August 15, 2007 by · Filed Under Web 2.0

There is a debate currently going on regarding the regulation of search engine natural results. My opinion leans toward opposing regulation. The idea that search engines need to be regulated stems from the belief that the engines are intentionally and manual biasing their algorithmic rankings in order to suppress or completely omit a specific website for illegitimate reasons. However, there is no empirical evidence proving this theory. On the other side of the debate, the idea that the search engines have created a “black box” which allows them to contain all the data and information about a company but the company has none about how the search engine uses this information in their search results. Advocates for regulation hold the belief that some third party should be able to “peer into the black box” and establish its legitimacy. In my opinion, the primary opposition to this is the hindrance of continued strides in technology and potential government control or censorship of a pure and technical resource. I do think this is an interesting debate and will continue to follow it as it unfolds. Cheers! Kelly.
