Social Media as a Means of Support

January 15, 2009 by admin · Filed Under Social Media

Social media is a very powerful tool both in communication and in marketing. One of the highlights of social media, moreover, is bringing people with common interests together—regardless of geological location. But what if social media could bring people with common problems together? According to reports that show online communities focused on health and wellbeing, it can, and it already does.

For example, someone who is newly diagnosed with cancer may find it hard to cope. This can be especially true if that person does not have someone in his or her life that has experienced going through something so devastating and trying. Where does this person go? Social media is breaking boundaries by giving many outlets for support. Websites such as MDJunction.com or DailyStrength.org are social networks for all things health-related, including cancer. There are many online groups within these sites geared towards specific diseases, conditions or even goals such as weight loss. Innovative hospitals are also making it a point to bring their patients together by holding live chats, or even forums. For instance, NorthShore University Health System’s live chats are changing the way in which patients communicate with their doctors. Patients, or even people just interested in the given chat topic can have their questions instantaneously.

As social media evolves, not only can users keep in touch with old contacts, but they can also find support from people who might seem to be strangers, but upon further examination, are a part of a support system.
