The widely anticipated release of T-Mobile’s Google Phone (named the G1 or Dream Phone) arrived today. Google’s Android platform has consumers and developers excited for the possibility of great innovation—even more so for the developers, as Android will be open source. The Android platform (and in turn the G1) seeks to bring the PC to the mobile phone through an array of features. Much like a personal computer, the G1 will bring forth many advertisement opportunities. Projections of the impact of the G1state that it “will provide a new platform for selling advertising. Revenue from search ads on phones may double to $181.1 million in the U.S. next year and reach $3.8 billion globally by 2012” (according to New York research firm EMarketer Inc.).
Google phone boasts features such as Internet browser and other Google services like search, Gmail and YouTube. With Google search built into the phone, users can be more inclined to use the search engine, and will be exposed to ads run by Google. Unlike traditional cellular phones which leave little room for ads, the G1 will bring forth many opportunities for businesses to buy ads that will appear in mobile devices. With the release of the G1 scheduled for next month, one can only wait to see the impact the phone will have on mobile advertising.
