Verizon Picks Microsoft as Default Search Engine

January 8, 2009 by · Filed Under Mobile Marketing, Web 2.0

Mobile service provider, Verizon, announced its pick of Microsoft Corporation as a provider for Internet search services for its cell phones. While many might believe search engine frontrunners, Google and Yahoo would have been optimal candidates, Verizon’s decision may just change which search engine is used the most. Verizon stated that the partnership would be long-term. This is something to note, as reports show that Verizon is projected to “surpass AT&T Inc as the No. 1 U.S. mobile carrier after it closes its purchase of smaller operator Alltel later this week”. This will give Microsoft a boost in the right direction in terms of gaining more traffic.

The economy has also played a part in the deal between Verizon and Microsoft. Other advantages include a possible share of revenue. Reuters states that “[l]ast year, The Wall Street Journal reported the two companies were in negotiations and that Microsoft would share with Verizon revenue from advertisements shown in response to cell phone Web searches”. How will Verizon users respond to Microsoft search? Can Verizon save Microsoft?
